The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is a United States-based organisation founded in 1956. It operates as the gateway body for international medical graduates who want to enter the US healthcare system. ECFMG does not accredit medical schools in the conventional sense; instead, it maintains a recognition database — the World Directory of Medical Schools, jointly with the FAIMER Institute — that determines which schools produce graduates eligible to sit the USMLE and apply for US residency programmes. Holding ECFMG recognition means a school's graduates meet the eligibility condition for ECFMG certification. It does not constitute automatic licensure, recognition in any country outside the US pathway, or a guarantee of residency placement.
TRNC universities holding ECFMG recognition
Only one TRNC university in our verified database holds ECFMG recognition:

Because only a single institution qualifies, prospective medicine students at other TRNC universities cannot currently use their degree as the entry condition for ECFMG certification and subsequent USMLE eligibility. EMU's recognition covers the faculty as a whole, but that still means individual programmes within the faculty should be confirmed on the World Directory register before enrolment decisions are made.
What to verify
- Confirm your specific programme is listed. Search EMU's Faculty of Medicine on the World Directory of Medical Schools (linked from ecfmg.org) and check that your exact programme appears — faculty-level recognition does not automatically extend to every sub-track or pathway.
- Check the valid-until date. Recognition status can change between the time you enrol and the time you graduate; re-verify at each stage of your studies.
- Cross-reference with your destination state's medical board. ECFMG certification is a federal-pathway entry condition, but individual US state licensing boards impose additional requirements; confirm directly with the relevant board before committing.
- If practising outside the US, consult that country's medical authority separately. ECFMG recognition carries no stated weight in other jurisdictions.
