What a year in TRNC actually costs

How we estimate living costs
Tuitionis each university's published rate, linked to its source on the university's profile.
Dorms are the universities' own price lists for the academic year (EMU, NEU, GAU, METUNCC, UoK, FIU, EUL, ARUCAD, ALAS). Pick a room and the line shows that room's price; leave it open and it shows the cheapest, the middle and the dearest room. A university that publishes no list gets the middle half of what the others charge.
Flats are what 37 flats on our housing board rent for, checked by our team in the last year: a room in a shared flat (rent divided by bedrooms) or a studio or 1+1 on your own, over a 12-month lease. Where a city has fewer than five flats on the board, the island-wide figure stands in. Bills follow the KIB-TEK home tariff of 1 June 2026 (tariff), mains water at the municipal rate and a home internet plan; air conditioning in winter and summer is most of it.
Food starts from the KTAMS food line for one adult (September 2026, source), built on the TRNC Statistical Institute's prices, for the 10 months of the academic year. Getting around is the odd trip where the campus bus is free (EMU, CIU, NEU, EUL) and city buses most days where it is not. Phone is a student plan from Telsim or KKTCELL. Books and personal spending are our own estimates.
Lira and sterling are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 19 Oct 2026 (1 EUR = 1.1225 USD = £0.84205 = ₺55.62) and rounded to the nearest 50. Lira prices rose 35% in the year to September 2026, faster than the lira fell, so these lines grow in euros through the year; we re-read the sources every three months.
