TRNC-Turkey ferry crossings resume today under new operator

Civilian ferry crossings between North Cyprus and Turkey are set to resume today, 1 September, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel confirmed. If you rely on the ferry for cheaper travel to and from Turkey, expect a different operator and a route set by the Coast Guard Command, not the previous carrier.

Filo Denizcilik's services were suspended until further notice by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, following a maritime incident in Girne. In its place, Akgünler Denizcilik begins operating the TRNC-Turkey route from today, following a route determined by the Coast Guard Command.

If you had already bought a Filo Denizcilik ticket and could not travel because of the incident, a regulation change protecting ticket rights took effect on 31 August. Check with your agent or the operator directly if you are owed a refund or a rebooking.

For students who need to fly instead, Pegasus and AJet added four extra flights for today only, 1 September, with discounted fares. If your ferry plans fall through, this is the fastest fallback, but seats on the added flights will not last.

Search and rescue operations connected to the incident are still ongoing, according to Üstel's statement. Details on casualties and the cause have not been confirmed in official statements covered here, so treat unofficial numbers with caution until authorities release them.

What this means practically: if your semester start depends on a ferry ticket bought before the suspension, contact your carrier about rebooking under the new operator or check your refund status under the ticket-rights rule.
