Fly into Ercan, and only Ercan
Ercan International Airport (ECN) is the airport of the TRNC. Two airlines serve it: Turkish Airlines (THY) and Pegasus (FLYPGS), both via Türkiye.
Landing at Larnaca or Paphos puts you in the Republic of Cyprus, on the other side of the island and the other side of a border you may not be able to cross with a TRNC student visa.
Arrive inside your university's announced window
Travel only between the dates announced by the TRNC government or by your university. Arrive before or after that window and entry can be refused — at which point you are put back on a plane at your own cost.
Your university sets this window. Do not infer it from the academic calendar — ask the international office and get it in writing.
What has to be in your hand luggage
Not in the hold. Passport control asks for these before your suitcase exists.
- Passport, national ID, and any visas your passport requires
- Your acceptance letter from the university
- Your tuition payment receipt
- Original academic documents — diploma and transcripts, not photocopies
- At least 1,250 USD, EUR or GBP in cash
The cash figure catches people out. It is proof you can support yourself, and officers do ask to see it. Bring it as cash; a bank statement or a card balance is not the same thing at a border desk.
You will be asked questions, and you are expected to answer them
Officers ask arriving students about their university, faculty and programme, where they will be living, and why they are travelling. Not knowing your own programme's name reads as someone who is not really coming to study.
FIU also asks its students to arrive presented as they would be for an appointment. That is not about fashion. Students on some passports are questioned more closely, and looking like an expected arrival shortens the conversation.
Have the name and phone number of whoever is collecting you, and the address you are going to. "A friend is picking me up" without a number is a poor answer.
Your phone can be inspected
TRNC passport control has the right to check mobile phones, tablets and laptops on entry.
FIU's notice tells its students they must not be carrying details relating to the Republic of Cyprus, including phone numbers with the +357 dialling code. We are reporting the university's instruction to its own students, and it reflects a real sensitivity at that border. If you have been in contact with anyone in the south — an agent, a landlord, a friend — know that those contacts can be seen.
Ask for the airport transfer before you fly
FIU runs a free transfer from Ercan on its arrival dates, and it needs your flight ticket at least three working days in advance, sent to your FIU representative or to the university directly.
Most TRNC universities run something similar with a similar deadline. Nobody can meet a flight they were not told about — send the ticket the moment you book it.
Register at your university within days of arriving
This is the step that quietly costs students the most.
You cannot file your student residence permit (ikamet) until your university has registered you. Registration is not automatic on arrival — you go to the international office and complete it. Leave it a few weeks and the residence-permit clock, which started the day you entered, has been running the whole time.
