Studying in North Cyprus from Ghana

Is the degree recognised when you go home? Here's what's documented.

Recognition rules change. Always verify directly.

The decision sits with the named authority below, not with UniNorth. This page documents what each TRNC university currently holds — but final eligibility is confirmed by the MDC (and equivalent bodies for non-medical fields).

Authorities to verify with

  • Medical and Dental Council, Ghana

Regulates medical and dental practice in Ghana; foreign-trained graduates register and sit the council's assessment before full practice. WFME-recognised schools are the standard eligibility signal.

  • Engineering Council Ghana

Statutory body regulating engineering practice in Ghana. Foreign-trained engineers register via the Council after qualification verification by GTEC.

  • Pharmacy Council Ghana

Regulates pharmacy practice in Ghana; foreign-trained pharmacists register after qualification recognition through GTEC.

Ghanaian students considering a degree from a North Cyprus (TRNC) university face a two-stage recognition process. First, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) must evaluate and equivalate the foreign qualification. After that, the relevant professional body — the Medical and Dental Council, Ghana (MDC), the Engineering Council Ghana (EngC), or the Pharmacy Council Ghana (PC) — handles professional registration, which typically includes its own assessment or screening step. English-medium instruction across TRNC universities removes the language barrier that complicates recognition from some other overseas destinations. The strongest portability signal for medicine is WFME recognition, which MDC treats as the baseline eligibility marker for foreign-trained graduates. For engineering and pharmacy, international programme-level accreditations from bodies such as ABET, ENAEE/EUR-ACE, and ACPE carry weight during GTEC's verification process.

What's documented

Medicine

Near East University (NEU) holds WFME recognition for its Faculty of Medicine. WFME listing is explicitly the standard eligibility signal MDC looks for when assessing foreign-trained doctors, making NEU's accreditation the most directly relevant data point for Ghanaian applicants. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds ECFMG recognition for all medical programmes — this is primarily a US licensure pathway signal and does not map directly onto MDC's assessment framework, though it confirms the programme meets a rigorous international benchmark. Girne American University (GAU) holds a WDOMS listing for its Faculty of Medicine; WDOMS is a directory listing rather than an accreditation, and MDC's specific weighting of it is not confirmed in available data.

Engineering

EMU holds ABET accreditation covering Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Industrial, Management, Mechatronics, and Software Engineering at BSc level. Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) also holds ABET for Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Computer, Chemical, Civil, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. NEU holds both ENAEE and EUR-ACE for its Faculty of Engineering. European University of Lefke (EUL) holds EUR-ACE. EngC routes recognition through GTEC qualification verification; ABET and ENAEE/EUR-ACE are internationally portable frameworks that support that process.

Pharmacy

NEU holds ACPE accreditation for its Faculty of Pharmacy. EMU holds both ACPE and PCN (Pharmacy Council of Nigeria) accreditation covering B.Pharm and Pharm.D programmes. Cyprus International University (CIU) holds both ACPE and PCN for its MPharm and PharmD programmes. EUL holds AHPGS for a programme list that includes Pharmacy. ACPE is a US-standard accreditor; PCN recognition is Nigeria-specific and does not transfer directly to Ghana, but signals regional African regulatory engagement. PC routes registration through GTEC qualification equivalency first.

What to verify yourself

  1. Confirm your specific programme appears on GTEC's current list of accepted foreign qualifications or submit a pre-enrolment equivalency inquiry directly to GTEC.
  2. For medicine, verify that MDC currently accepts WFME-listed schools as eligible for its assessment, and confirm the exact format and sitting schedule of the council's assessment examination.
  3. For engineering, confirm EngC's current documentation requirements for GTEC-verified foreign qualifications.
  4. For pharmacy, confirm PC's registration pathway for foreign-trained graduates and whether ACPE accreditation is explicitly recognised in its equivalency rules.
  5. Arrange certified translations and apostille authentication of all academic documents before applying to GTEC.
