Studying in North Cyprus from Nigeria

Is the degree recognised when you go home? Here's what's documented.

Recognition rules change. Always verify directly.

The decision sits with the named authority below, not with UniNorth. This page documents what each TRNC university currently holds — but final eligibility is confirmed by the MDCN (and equivalent bodies for non-medical fields).

Authorities to verify with

  • Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria

Regulates medical and dental practice in Nigeria; foreign-trained graduates sit the MDCN Assessment Examination before full registration. MDCN generally treats WFME-recognised schools as eligible.

  • Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria

Statutory body regulating engineering practice in Nigeria. Foreign-trained engineers register via COREN's foreign-qualification assessment.

  • Pharmacists Council of Nigeria

Regulates pharmacy practice and education; foreign-trained pharmacists must register and may sit a qualification exam.

Nigerian graduates of TRNC universities face a defined but multi-step recognition path. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) governs medical registration; foreign-trained doctors must pass the MDCN Assessment Examination before full registration, and MDCN treats schools listed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) as generally eligible. The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) handles engineering qualifications through a foreign-qualification assessment process. The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) oversees pharmacy registration and may require a qualification examination for foreign graduates. Knowing which TRNC universities hold accreditations from these bodies — or from international bodies these authorities recognise — is the starting point for any serious enrolment decision.

What's documented

Medicine

Near East University (NEU) holds WFME recognition for its Faculty of Medicine. Since MDCN treats WFME-listed schools as eligible for the Assessment Examination, this is the strongest medicine-related signal in the dataset for Nigerian applicants. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds ECFMG recognition covering all medical programmes and TEPDAD accreditation for its Medicine programme run jointly with Marmara University; ECFMG recognition is primarily relevant for US licensure but also signals institutional quality. EMU's WDOMS listing provides a baseline directory entry. Girne American University (GAU) appears in the WDOMS listing for its Faculty of Medicine; WDOMS alone is a directory listing, not an accreditation, and carries less weight than WFME recognition with MDCN.

Engineering

Near East University (NEU) holds direct COREN accreditation for its Faculty of Engineering — this is the single most significant data point for Nigerian engineering students in the entire dataset. COREN accreditation at source substantially reduces friction in the foreign-qualification assessment process. NEU also holds ENAEE and EUR-ACE labels. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) both hold ABET accreditation across multiple programmes; ABET is widely portable and relevant to COREN's assessment, though it is not a substitute for direct COREN recognition. European University of Lefke (EUL) holds a EUR-ACE label with no programme-level scope detail on file.

Pharmacy

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds direct PCN accreditation for its B.Pharm and Pharm.D. programmes — the strongest pharmacy signal for Nigerian applicants. Cyprus International University (CIU) also holds direct PCN accreditation for its MPharm and Pharm.D. programmes. Both NEU and EMU additionally hold ACPE accreditation (US pharmacy standard). EUL and CIU hold AHPGS labels covering pharmacy within broader programme bundles.

What to verify yourself

  1. Confirm the MDCN's current list of recognised foreign medical schools and check whether NEU's WFME status satisfies current eligibility criteria at https://www.mdcn.gov.ng/.
  2. For engineering, contact COREN directly to confirm that its on-file accreditation of NEU's Faculty of Engineering covers your specific programme and graduation year at https://coren.gov.ng/.
  3. For pharmacy, verify that EMU's or CIU's PCN accreditation remains active and covers your intended degree level at https://www.pcn.gov.ng/.
  4. Confirm the current MDCN Assessment Examination and PCN qualification examination schedules, pass-rate data, and registration requirements before enrolling.
  5. Budget for document apostille and certified translation requirements — Nigerian authorities typically require notarised originals.

Recognition rules change without notice. Verify directly with MDCN, COREN, and PCN before making any enrolment commitment.
