A North Cyprus degree is recognised in Nigeria one graduate at a time, in two steps. First, the Federal Ministry of Education (Evaluation and Accreditation Division) evaluates the degree. Since 15 April 2026 that evaluation is fully online at essverify.education.gov.ng: the graduate applies, the university e-mails the transcript to the Ministry, and nobody visits an office. NYSC does not mobilise a foreign-trained graduate without the Ministry's evaluation letter. Second, the professional council registers the graduate: the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for doctors and dentists, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) for engineers, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) for pharmacists. Below is what each TRNC university holds with those councils, read from the councils' and universities' own pages on 16 and 17 October 2026.
What's documented
Engineering
COREN's own list of foreign accredited universities names Near East University (NEU): 13 engineering programmes accredited from March 2018 to 2023 (three of them only to 2020), and all 13 now listed as "Awaiting Accreditation". The University of Kyrenia and the European University of Lefke are shown the same way. So no TRNC engineering degree on that list carries a current COREN accreditation, and COREN decides each graduate's registration itself. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) hold ABET accreditation across several engineering programmes, and NEU's Faculty of Engineering holds ENAEE / EUR-ACE labels. These are quality signals a COREN assessor can see; none of them replaces COREN registration.
Pharmacy
PCN has accredited the pharmacy degrees at Cyprus International University (CIU) (PharmD and MPharm, since 2017, per CIU's accreditations page) and Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) (after PCN's August 2017 inspection, per EMU). A foreign-trained pharmacist still goes through PCN's orientation programme and examination before registration. NEU and EMU also hold ACPE (US) accreditation for pharmacy.
Medicine
MDCN registers foreign-trained doctors and dentists only after they pass its assessment examination. What is on file: NEU lists WFME on its own accreditations page; EMU holds ECFMG recognition and TEPDAD accreditation for its Medicine programme run jointly with Marmara University. The World Directory of Medical Schools lists NEU, CIU, Girne American University (GAU) and the University of Kyrenia, and states that a listing does not denote recognition; EMU's medical school was not in it when we searched on 17 October 2026.
Nursing and law
CIU's accreditations page describes the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the Nigerian Law School, but it does not claim accreditation from either. We found no NMCN accreditation for any TRNC nursing degree. The Nigerian Law School is a school, not an accreditor; a law graduate needs the Council of Legal Education's approval and the Bar Part I, and we found no TRNC law degree with that approval.
What to verify yourself
- Apply for the Federal Ministry of Education evaluation at essverify.education.gov.ng as soon as you graduate. NYSC asks for the evaluation letter.
- Engineering: ask COREN whether your programme and graduation year are covered, and check its foreign list for NEU's renewal at https://coren.gov.ng/.
- Pharmacy: confirm that PCN's accreditation of CIU or EMU still covers your degree and intake year at https://www.pcn.gov.ng/.
- Medicine: check the next MDCN assessment examination, its fees and its requirements at https://www.mdcn.gov.ng/.
- Nursing: NMCN's route for foreign-trained nurses runs through registration in the country of training, verification, orientation and an examination. Read it at https://www.nmcn.gov.ng/ before choosing a TRNC nursing degree.
