Somali students considering a TRNC degree need to understand two sequential steps: qualification equivalence through the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education (MOECHE) and then professional registration through the relevant sectoral ministry, such as the Ministry of Health (MoH) for medical graduates. MOECHE assesses foreign credentials against Somali standards before any professional pathway opens. For medicine, ask the MoH what it requires; we found no published Somali list of accepted foreign schools. Long-standing ties between Türkiye and Somalia mean TRNC institutions are not unfamiliar to Somali authorities, but familiarity is not the same as automatic recognition. Near East University (NEU) lists WFME on its own accreditations page; WFME recognises accrediting agencies rather than schools, and since 2024 it matters mainly for the US route (ECFMG). Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds ECFMG recognition for its Faculty of Medicine across all medical programmes — a US-oriented credential that demonstrates institutional quality but does not directly map to Somali MoH requirements. Girne American University (GAU) appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which states that a listing does not denote recognition.
Engineering
EMU holds ABET accreditation covering Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Industrial, Management, Mechatronics, and Software Engineering at BSc level. Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) also holds ABET across Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Computer, Chemical, Civil, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. NEU holds both ENAEE recognition and EUR-ACE labels for its Faculty of Engineering. European University of Lefke (EUL) holds EUR-ACE. For MOECHE equivalence submissions, ABET and EUR-ACE are internationally recognised frameworks that provide credible supporting documentation.
Pharmacy
NEU and EMU both hold ACPE accreditation — the US pharmacy education standard — for their respective pharmacy programmes. EUL and Cyprus International University (CIU) hold AHPGS accreditation, a German agency covering health and social sciences. No direct Somalia-specific pharmacy accreditation body appears in the data; MOECHE equivalence is the operative route.
