Studying in North Cyprus from Yemen

Is the degree recognised when you go home? Here's what's documented.

Recognition rules change. Always verify directly.

The decision sits with the named authority below, not with UniNorth. This page documents what each TRNC university currently holds — but final eligibility is confirmed by the YMC (and equivalent bodies for non-medical fields).

Authorities to verify with

  • Yemeni Medical Council

Medical practice in Yemen is regulated under the Ministry of Public Health and Population; foreign-trained physicians seek degree equivalence then registration. WFME-recognised schools are the safe signal for foreign-graduate eligibility.

  • Yemeni Engineers Syndicate

Professional engineering membership in Yemen follows Ministry of Higher Education degree equivalence. Foreign engineering graduates verify credentials before syndicate registration.

Yemeni graduates seeking to practise medicine or engineering after studying in North Cyprus face a two-stage process: degree equivalence through the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR), followed by registration with the relevant professional body — the Yemeni Medical Council (YMC) under the Ministry of Public Health and Population for medicine, or the Yemeni Engineers Syndicate (YES) for engineering. The YMC has no published foreign-school whitelist of its own; instead, WFME recognition of a medical faculty is the strongest portable signal that a degree will be treated as eligible for equivalence review. Conflict-related disruption means both ministries can process slowly, so keeping fully attested transcripts and original accreditation certificates is essential from day one of enrolment.

What's documented

Medicine

Near East University (NEU) holds WFME recognition for its Faculty of Medicine. WFME is the signal most foreign-graduate medical registration systems — including those that defer to Ministry-level equivalence reviews — treat as a baseline quality marker, making NEU's documentation the most portable starting point for a Yemeni applicant. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds ECFMG recognition for all medical programmes; ECFMG is oriented toward US licensure and does not substitute for WFME in most non-US jurisdictions, though it signals programme quality. Girne American University (GAU) holds WDOMS listing for its Faculty of Medicine; WDOMS is a directory rather than an accreditation body, and it carries less weight than WFME with most national councils.

Engineering

EMU holds ABET accreditation covering Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Industrial, Management, Mechatronics, and Software Engineering at BSc level. Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) also holds ABET across Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Computer, Chemical, Civil, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. NEU holds both ENAEE and EUR-ACE recognition for its Faculty of Engineering. European University of Lefke (EUL) holds EUR-ACE. For YES syndicate registration, MHESR equivalence is the gateway; ABET and EUR-ACE both signal internationally benchmarked programmes and strengthen that application.

Pharmacy

NEU holds ACPE accreditation for its Faculty of Pharmacy. EMU holds ACPE for its MPharm and PharmD programmes. EUL and Cyprus International University (CIU) each hold AHPGS accreditation covering pharmacy programmes. ACPE is a US-standard pharmacy accreditor; no direct Yemen-specific pharmacy accreditation body is captured in available data, so recognition would route through MHESR equivalence.

What to verify yourself

  1. Confirm MHESR's current equivalence criteria for foreign degrees, including any minimum GPA or attestation format requirements, before enrolling.
  2. Check whether the YMC requires WFME listing explicitly for foreign medical graduates seeking registration, and whether any licensing or screening examination applies.
  3. Confirm YES membership requirements for foreign engineering graduates, including whether specific accreditation bodies (ABET, EUR-ACE) are named as acceptable by MHESR.
  4. Arrange apostille of all documents from TRNC authorities and certified Arabic translation; given processing delays, begin this during your final semester.
  5. Re-verify all requirements at point of graduation — rules can change during a four-to-six year programme.
