The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is a global body headquartered in France, founded in 1972, that sets international standards for medical education quality. It does not accredit individual universities in the conventional sense; instead, it recognises national accreditation agencies and maintains a listing of medical schools whose programmes meet its standards. That listing carries significant weight: several national medical licensing authorities now treat WFME recognition as a precondition for foreign-trained graduates to sit local licensure exams. Notably, the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) requires graduation from a WFME-listed school as of 2024, and India's National Medical Commission has adopted a parallel requirement post-2024. WFME recognition is not automatic acceptance everywhere — requirements vary by country and licensing body.
TRNC universities holding WFME accreditation
Only one TRNC university in our database holds WFME recognition:
- NEU — Near East University · scope: programmatic · "Faculty of Medicine"
This means the recognition applies specifically to Near East University's Faculty of Medicine, not to the university as a whole or to other health-related programmes it may offer. If you are considering a medicine degree at another TRNC institution, that school's Faculty of Medicine would need to be listed separately on the WFME database before the same benefits would apply. Prospective students should not assume that a university's general reputation or other accreditations extend this particular recognition to any programme beyond the one named above.
What to verify
- Confirm that the specific programme and graduation year you are targeting are covered by Near East University's current WFME listing — search the school by name on the WFME database directly, not just the faculty website.
- Check the valid-until date on the listing, as recognitions are subject to periodic review and renewal.
- If you plan to practise medicine in a specific country, contact that country's licensing authority — for example, ECFMG for the US pathway or the relevant state medical council — to confirm their current requirements for WFME-listed graduates.
