After ferry disaster, Ercan flight prices jump to 22,000 TL

A catamaran ferry carrying 267 people capsized off Girne on August 30. Authorities have confirmed 8 deaths, with 18 people still missing as of August 31, and a three-day national mourning period is in effect.

With sea crossings between Girne and Taşucu suspended, hundreds of passengers have been stranded at the port. Many have turned to flights instead, and prices have spiked sharply. Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul said fares on the roughly 45-50 minute Çukurova-Ercan route jumped from 6,000 TL to 22,000 TL. Separate reporting put confirmed fares at over 21,000 TL for the same short flight.

Şenkul made a similar point, arguing that even in these conditions the tourism sector could not step back from a commercial mindset. Neither official announced a fare cap or subsidy at time of writing, so prices remain at the airlines' discretion for now.
