Is the degree recognised when you go home? Here's what's documented.

Recognition rules change. Always verify directly.

The decision sits with the named authority below, not with UniNorth. This page documents what each TRNC university currently holds — but final eligibility is confirmed by the YÖK (and equivalent bodies for non-medical fields).

Authorities to verify with

  • Council of Higher Education (Türkiye)

YÖK's equivalency (Denklik) process applies to all foreign degrees used in Türkiye for state employment, professional registration, or further study. Medical graduates may additionally need TEPDAD-listed schooling for the smoothest path.

Turkish students and graduates considering TRNC degrees occupy a structurally distinct position compared to most other nationalities. The Council of Higher Education (Türkiye) — known by its Turkish abbreviation YÖK — is the single authority that governs degree equivalency (Denklik) for all foreign qualifications used in Türkiye for state employment, professional registration, or postgraduate study. Critically, a YÖDAK-YÖK inter-institutional protocol already recognises all TRNC universities at the institutional level, meaning the baseline is more favourable than for most foreign systems. What determines practical usability, however, is programme-level YÖK recognition and, for health and engineering fields, alignment with discipline-specific accreditors such as TEPDAD for medicine and MÜDEK for engineering. That programme-level detail is where scrutiny belongs.

What's documented

Medicine

Every TRNC university with a medical faculty in the data holds YÖK recognition at some level: European University of Lefke (EUL), Near East University (NEU), Cyprus International University (CIU), and Girne American University (GAU) each hold YÖK accreditation with no programme-specific scope detail recorded. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) holds YÖK recognition scoped to "All EMU programmes," and its Faculty of Medicine additionally holds TEPDAD accreditation — the Turkish national medical education accreditor — under a joint programme with Marmara University. That TEPDAD listing is the strongest available signal for smooth Turkish medical recognition. NEU's Faculty of Medicine also holds WFME recognition, relevant for international portability. METU Northern Cyprus Campus (METUNCC) holds YÖK recognition as a state university across all programmes.

Engineering

EUL holds both YÖK and MÜDEK accreditation, with MÜDEK covering Computer Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. CIU similarly holds MÜDEK for Computer, Electrical & Electronics, Industrial, and Civil Engineering alongside YÖK. EMU holds ABET accreditation across eight engineering disciplines plus programme-wide YÖK recognition. METUNCC holds both ABET and YÖK for multiple engineering branches as a state university. NEU and GAU hold YÖK recognition without additional discipline-specific accreditation on file.

Pharmacy

EUL, NEU, EMU, CIU, GAU, and METUNCC all hold YÖK recognition at varying scopes. CIU additionally holds AHPGS accreditation covering Pharmacy (MPharm/PharmD); EUL holds AHPGS across a broader programme bundle that includes Pharmacy. Professional licensing beyond Denklik requires separate clearance from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

What to verify yourself

  1. Confirm that the specific programme you are enrolling in — not just the university — currently holds YÖK programme-level recognition before signing any enrolment agreement.
  2. For medicine, check whether your target faculty appears on YÖK's and TEPDAD's current lists; the EMU-Marmara joint structure may have specific conditions.
  3. For engineering, confirm whether MÜDEK or ABET status satisfies your intended employer or licensing body.
  4. For pharmacy, contact the Turkish Ministry of Health directly about professional registration requirements beyond Denklik.
  5. Prepare apostilled transcripts and certified translations into Turkish — YÖK Denklik applications require these.
  6. Recognition criteria and listed institutions can change; verify all details directly with YÖK at https://www.yok.gov.tr/ before enrolling.
